V.1.2 Desktop app freezes on Snow Leopard

Kenneth T Bruseth

When I start the ‘MyPhoneDesktop’ app on my Mac, it just gives me the ‘spinning beach ball’ and needs to be forced to quit. I downloaded the previous version of the desktop client, V. 1.0.1, and it starts up and works fine. I’m running Snow Leopard V. 10.6.3 on my 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macintosh computer. I have 4 GB of RAM installed on my machine.

When I go to the ‘Console’ app to look at the logs, I'm unable to find anything related to MyPhoneDesktop app. Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kenny

Hi, new user here and unfortunately having the same problem; app won't launch, just hangs and needs force-quitting. Can send a console log if needed, though.

Thanks.

Hi Ben,

I created a support ticket from you so you can send log in the private (support) forum

Another new user here, having exactly the same problem. Found that it appears to hang only when DragThing (latest version) is also running--close DragThing & myPhoneDesktop runs fine. Re-open DragThing & problem is back. I can also send a log if needed.

Will also report to DragThing developer.

Les,

Can you try the following:
- delete current myPhoneDesktop
- download and install this (experimental build): https://myphonedesktop.com/temp/myPhoneDesktop_macos_1_2a.dmg

and let me know if you still experiencing same problems (you may need to reboot, just in case...)

Thank you
Alex

Les,

if above v1.2a would not resolve issue with DragThing - please create support case and send me log.

You can also try adding myPhoneDesktop to the list of excluded applicaitons (via DragThing Preferences | Docks |Edit List of excluded applicaitons...)

It seems like myPhoneDesktop works fine with DragThing (default configuration). However, it seems like when some specific functionality of the DragThing is enables, something happening that causes the error...

Thank you.

Les,

It seems that single setting (off by default) in DragThing cousing myPhoneDesktop to freeze during start-up. The settings is: DragThing Preferences | Docks | Window Dock | SHow applicaiton windows in a dock. If this setting is off - all appears to be fine. If ON... trouble :(

Please confirm if you see same behavior. I will contact DragThing develper and update this thread as soon as new info is available.

Alex,

Wow. That's some quick and impressive troubleshooting and response to a user post.

The alternate version you offered did not fix the problem., but the change in the "show windows" dock pref seems to have corrected it completely.

Both apps now run simultaneously without any problem.

Now, THAT'S what I call technical support!  Amazing. Thanks.

Also, thanks for such a clever & useful phone app. Just what I was looking for.

Hi Les,

Thank for your kind words! (made my day)

Yes, you are correct, alternative verison did not resolve this issue. But, I am glad that "show window" did. I sent email to James, DragThing developer and hopefuly we can find what causing this (even adding myPhoneDesktop to "show window" excluded apps does not resolve issue). Will update this thread as soon as I new some more...

Thank you!
Of course I'd love to get your ideas on how I can improve the app with new functions, or make it easier to use.

Will appreciate if you can submit a review to Apple's app store and please tell your friends about myPhoneDesktop.

Yours truly,

Alex

Hi Alex, sorry to re-open this thread but there still seems to be a conflict between the mPD client (1.3) and Quickeys, which I just started using (v. 4.0.7) – LazyMouse still working fine, though. Tried it on both my home and my work computer with same results (freeze). Any idea?

Many thanks in advance,

Ben

Ben, Yes, I am aware. We are working with it. Quickeys appear to be the only one left that we still not able to pint-point whats happening. It happens only if you trying to quit myPhoneDesktop from within application. Correct? Dock Right-Click and Cmd+Q quits myPhoneDesktop with no problem.

Alex, thanks for your reply. In fact, just clicking the mPD icon in the menubar is sometimes enough to get the "spinning beachball of death." Will keep an eye on this forum in case you have any news :-)

Best,
Ben

Same problem here with 1.3. With QK 4.0.7, myPhoneDesktop hangs with spinning beachball, sometimes immediately when clicking menu icon, sometimes after a few seconds. Turn QK off, everything's fine. Repeatable.

Just an update: Waiting for QK developer to get back to me. Meanwhile: see if un-checking Tile Windows resolves myPhoneDesktop freezing issues for you. Un-Checking this option resolves feezing on my system, but need confirmation ☺ Thank you.

see attached screenshot.

I don't have a Tile Windows shortcut to uncheck. Deleted it long ago.

Guys, thank you for update. Appreciate it. Actively working on resolving this... and awaiting response from QK developer. I would appreciate if you (as QK registered users) can contact QK developer and request that he contact us to resolve this issue. Feel free to point him/her to this post.

Something is very strange going on as I still can not "put my finger" on the error pattern. Every time I ran QK and myPhoneDesktop I observer different behavior: sometimes all fine (no errors, no freezing) and then restarting moth apps and myPhoneDesktop freezing only on Quite, restart again and myPhoneDesktop freezing even on hide... Anyway, not to bore you with details :) I am trying to find where these 2 apps colliding and why.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Regards,

Alex

Alex, thanks for your reply. Not sure how much weight my request would carry as I'm still using QK's 30-day trial before deciding to buy it or not. Will still mention it to their support - can't hurt.

Thanks. We are working with the developer (no success as of yet). Have you look at Quicksilver http://www.blacktree.com/ or Launchbar http://www.obdev.at/products/launchbar/index.html

Still freezing when QK is running, as of v1.5. Any hope for a solution soon?

Yes, but :( unfortunately we are still investigating why and what cause QK to kill mPD... QK is the only app as many, many other apps of similar functionality (DragThings, QuickSilver, Launchbar, etc, etc, etc) - no problems whatsoever... Thank you for your patience!

Still same problem on 1.6. No progress yet on correcting the conflict with QK?

Unfortunately not yet. Not sure there is much we can do from our end. I would suggest you contact QK developers (we done this from our end) and request that they add ability to exclude myPhoneDesktop from what-ever they are doing :) Aside from QK - myPhoneDesktop client has no issues with any app of same as QK categories (DragThing, LaunchBar, QuickSilver, etc)... Thank you for understanding!
